Ahhh...I can see it, feel it, smell it, Spring is in the air! Just a few more weeks and Spring will finally be here. Other than Fall, Spring is my second favorite season. After a dreary winter with snow and icy mixes, dry beatened skin, and itchy wool coats, I am ready for the crisp, sunny days ahead. What I love most is Easter (it's just something nostalgic about attending church, and eating a big brunch/dinner with the fam) spending more time outdoors, and checking out the new spring fashions. I will posting my trend report shortly after Spring hits, but in the meantime, I have included a few fashion/beauty events you Urbanistas may be interested in attending this spring!

Urbanistas in the City-January

The Urbanistas hit up two of the most popular bridal events in St. Louis, Alive Bride and UNVEILED. We first checked out Alive Bride held at Lumen. As mentioned, I attended this event last year and had a fab time; this year I was not disappointed.

Upon arrival, we received goodie bags. We then headed to the bar for a complimentary glass of Mirrasou Pinot Grigio, and sampled some of the delacacies at Mihalis Chop House and Bryan Young Catering. After nibbling on all the free samples, we headed upstairs to the grooms' lounge where they had mini burgers and pizza and a cool lounge area for the grooms to be. The event wrapped with a bridal gown viewing.

Spotted were Alive Magazine's Christy Miller, Attillio D'Agostino, Jason Nichols and Urbanista Sheniqua Faulkner. I also spotted Jeanne Roberts Johnson, Danielle Hunt, Danielle Lee with Fete Society, Teddy "B Free" Blackett, and Urbanistas April McKinney and Coco the Photographer. Click here for all the pics!

After a lovely church service Jasonee and I headed down to UNVEILED at the Chase, compliments of St. Louis Magazine. There were several bridal vendors in attendance, but what I most recall is the LAVISH dessert table! After nibbling on just about every dessert they had, (and several mimosas) we headed to the fashion show. The show was very traditional compared to Alive's trendy show, but I enjoyed seeing fashions for mothers of the bride.

Spotted were STL Magazine's Megan Riley Frishe and Ms. Lee, model and business exec Janet Jackson (yes, that is her REAL name) designer Paul Gibson, and my girl-fashion model Jade. Click here for all the pics!

Last, but certainly not least, the Urbanistas headed to the Boulevard to catch the Cash and Carry Boutique Sale put on by Cheresse Ink; and caught some great deals on all things designer, just in time for Spring! All the fab fashion boutiques were in the house including Jule, Codi, Blush, and Ivy Hill. I picked up this colorful pink and green flowing dress that I plan to rock during the AKA Boule' this summer!

Today, we are celebrating 102 years of service! 2010 is a big year for the AKA's, especially here in St. Louis. In 2008 I had the distinguished honor of attending our national conference in Washington D.C. for our centennial celebration. Although nothing will be able to cap that memorable event, this may come close as we will be hosting the Alpha Kappa Alpha national convention here in St. Louis!! Ya'll get ready, because we are definitely going to paint the town pink and green!

Hey Urbanistas, as you know Martin Luther King's bday is tomorrow and I wanted to share a few events going on in the next couple of days. Now if you didn't hear, there was a kickoff celebration last Saturday at HSSU (Harris Stowe State University) that my lovely hubby took me to (which was a total surprise)! Al Sharpton was the guest speaker, and I tell you ladies, it was truly inspirational. The MLK kickoff celebration was hosted by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. State Celebration Commission and there were quite a few St. Louis dignitaries in the house including Johnny and Minga Furr, Ruth Smith, Johnetta Haley (my lovely seasoned soror), Ida Woolfolk, Mayor Francis Slay, James Buford, License Collector Mike McMillian, William "Lacy" Clay Jr., and KSDK News Channel 5 emcees Sharon Stevens and Anthony Slaughter. Rev. Al really brought me to tears when he spoke about how the older generation fought so hard for all of us to be successful; and how we tend to forget to reach back to help those who helped us get to where we are. It was those who had little education, but a lot of heart to fight for what's right. Basically, it is our duty to continue to give back to all who may be less fortunate. I will definitely find more time in 2010 to give back to my people. On another note, there are quite a few events going on in celebration of MLK day, so make sure you get out in honor of the king! Happy New Year Urbanistas! We made it through another year, lets give all the glory to the one up above that graced us with the opportunity to see another year. 2010...can you believe it? The year 2000 seems like a distant memory (aww, I was so young back then)! With every new year brings new and exciting things to look forward to. I tell you one thing, I am claiming 2010 as my year. I am going to overcome my fears, start my business, and accomplish my goals that I have been putting off year after year. For some reason, I made a crazy bet with my husband that I would be making enough money by the end of the year where I would be able to quit my job (if I wanted to)! We'll ya'll get what I am saying, basically, I am doing it big for 2010, I'm claiming it and it shall be done!

For several years my NYE included hitting up the hot clubs, dancing all night then toasting in the new year with (several) glasses of champagne! As I have entered my 30s (early), things seemed to have mellowed down for me a little. Now don't get me wrong, I love a great party, but I am now more into chilling at my favorite lounge/restaurant and enjoying a good martini with my girls. Urbanistas in the City--Holiday Edition!

What a festive month December was, however, I am absolutely drained. Although I didn't do much at the beginning of the month, I sure made up for it during the last few weeks. The Urbanistas were here, there, and everywhere; socializing, networking, and merry making!

We started at the Simple Pleasures III event hosted by B Free Paparazzi and indulged in decadent chocolate treats, champagne and sushi all while enjoying neo soul beats, spoken word, and belly dancing. There was a great mix of black socialites and movers and shakers in the house including SYGU's Eddie Holman, LME's Otto Nichols, Freetime's Darryl Gillespie, Attorney Ryan Smith, B Free's Miata Lewis-Harris, JoAnn Smith, Corey Black, Masherryl Conyer, and just about every other young urban professional. Next up, was our 1st Annual Holiday Fete in which we hosted special guest Ola Hawatmeh, from Mom Me Makeove r and her guest, Angie. We didn't have the turnout that I would've liked, but I expected that with all the holiday parties going on this month (which is why I wanted to host the party last month, but you know how that turned out)! The party was at Red Kitchen and Bar which featured a tapas styled menu. We sipped on "Grinch" and "Pointsetta" martinis, networked and chatted about the upcoming movie Sex and the City II, and how we may need to host a party...or two. Click here for all the pics!

The following week, I attended a private fashion show and dinner at Paul Mineos in Westport to benefit Makeover for a Cause. This time I was the special guest of Ola. I was truly honored that she wanted me to attend such a fabulous event. The show was amazing and the appetizers were great! In the house were Alive Magazine and Gilberto Pinela of STL-TV. I didn't get a chance to make the "Networking Event of the Year" aka "Who's Who in Black St. Louis," because...well the tickets were a little too pricey. I know the price included a copy of the book, but heck, if I ain't in it, I could really use that money elsewhere, especially during these times. But I did want to give a shout out to two Urbanistas that were included in the book this year, Jasonee Ragland (soon to be Mrs.) of the St. Louis Urban League and Dr. Jennifer McCleary of Triad Chiropractic. Congrats ladies!

The Urbanistas did get a chance to swing through the young, black, urban professionals "Who's Who" set as we attended the Urban League Young Professionals aka the "YP's" Holiday Extravaganza at Hotel Lumiere. I caught the tail end of the party since I was at Ola's fashion show earlier that evening, but when I arrived, the party was still in full swing. Spotted networking were past presidents Barry Neal and Deanna Carroll, newly elected president, Kendrick Joshway, past treasurer Nate Johnson, and socialites Deone Nealie and Makeda Crane (skee wee Soror). After the party fizzled down, I saw a few of the youngins headed out to various locations in the city. However, after a night of holiday festivities, food, and wine, I was ready to call it a night. This week, I will be relaxing (and celebrating) with my hubby as his bday is tomorrow, then preparing for my annual holiday brunch I will be hosting for my family. You would've thought I'd had enough of entertaining after Thanksgiving, but I'm a junkie for throwing parties, so I just can't help myself. However, this time, it will be on a much lower scale, just 10 of us this time. On the menu we have mimosas, roasted duck, breakfast casserole, brown sugar glazed bacon, pancakes, garlic and butter saute' schrimp, fresh fruit, ham, biscuits, grits....okay, let me stop, cause I am getting hungry!!LOL Anyhoo, I hope all you Urbanistas enjoy spending time with your families and have a safe and very blessed Christmas and Kwanzaa.

Entertaining Urbanistas-Holidays

Now that my fashion and beauty kick is resting (for awhile), wanted to settle down and post about entertaining for the holidays. As I mentioned before, I am an entertaining junkie, so this is about the time I plan a fabulous holiday fete for both friends and family. This year I am hosting Thanksgiving at my home. I am planning for close to 25 people, and I am a little nervous. Since I am not enthused about cooking for this many people, I decided to make this a family affair so everyone will bring a dish.

The following day, I plan to host a tree trimming party. Since everyone will still be in town, they can help me put up my tree and decorate the house for Christmas time. I'm gonna put on my Motown Christmas hits, bring out my decorations and let everyone have at it! Since there will be several children, I decided to put together a smores station so they can make smores in the fireplace. We will then bake cookies and make hot cocoa for all to enjoy. For eats, we'll nibble on leftover turkey and sweet potatoe pie!

Whatever you decide to do this holiday season, please remember the purpose of it all. It's about giving thanks, and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ!!

Urbanista In the City-Shan Keith Fashion Show

Last Friday night I decided to check out the Shan Keith fashion show featuring his latest line, Nēché Collection. Nēché Collection by Shan Keith is a line dedicated to his late sister Ms. Santonya Nēché Oliver. Shan lost his sister last year due to a brain aneurysm. He dedicated his entire show in memory of her. For those that don't know, Shan Keith also won Project Design at St. Louis Fashion Week this past Spring. This also happened to be the first STLFW show I had attended and can truly say he deserved the title!

The show was held at Windows on Washington downtown, and was the perfect spot to host this fabulous show. As I entered the lobby I was greeted by a gentleman serving complimentary champagne, and a beautiful rain fountain with glass flowers that sparkled under the light. The ambiance was truly and urban experience. I then proceeded to the freight elevator which took me to the 8th floor where the show was being held. Once upstairs, I nibbled on cheese, crackers, and fruit then chatted at the bar until they announced for everyone to take their seats. Before the show started, I wanted to check to see what goodies I got in my VIP bag thanks to my girl Nikole! I was happy to see a small bottle of Pearl Vodka, Aveda samples, and various coupons to local downtown businesses.

At about 8:00, the show began. The host for the night was P-Dub, fomerly known as Pretty Willy. As the music pumped up, the photographers got in place, the models came strutting out in some sharp ensembles. I have to give it to Shan, he has talent. He featured about 60 different looks that evening and everything was on point! I loved his models too. There were all shades of brown and sizes modeling his line, which is what I appreciated. He gets it...Shan realizes that the all types of people love fashion, and we are all not 6 feet tall and a size 0!! I can't wait to head down to NV Showroom and Boutique (1909 Washington Ave) to see if I can get one of the pieces this plus sized woman was rocking down the runway.

During and after the show I spotted Kenya Vaughn of St. Louis American, Ma'at, blogger for Outtown, Attilio D'Agostino and Jill Manoff of Alive Magazine, and Nikole Shurn-Perkins who did the PR for the event and just opened up NV Showroom and Boutique. There were also a host of socialites including my Sorors Rachel Westerfield and Trenell Billups (Skee Wee Sorors)! As with most of the events I attend, I had a fabulous time and I will definitely look for future shows from this up and coming designer! Click here for all the pics

New Feaure--Fabulosity Tips!!

About a year ago, I decided to purchase Kimora's book "Fabulosity." Now I have to admit, I really wasn't a big fan of Kimora, not that I didn't like her, I just didn't know much about her. It wasn't until I started watching her reality show "Life in the Fab Lane" that I became intrigued by her. I loved the fact that she was so "extra", but confident, down to earth, and in essence a "true sista"! I loved her book. She discusses everything from beauty and fashion, and work and family life, to self-confidence and wellness, and lifestyle and sustainability. I thought this book captured the epitome of what an Urbanista is all about. So with that said, I decided that I would include a few tips from Kimora's book from time to time.

Since this month I have been engulfed with all things beauty and fashion, I'll start with *Kimora's five-point fashion manifesto:

1. Style is a form of self-promotion
2. Developing a style is like your brandmark; it'll get you noticed and remembered.
3. Fashion bestows autority and power on the wearer: dress to impress, and you will be taken seriously.
4. Great style says, "Here I am! Pay attention to me!" I value myself enough to put effort into this, and you should too.
5. Style is invididual. Style is subjective. Nobody can grade you on it.

St. Louis Fashion Week--All Access Pass!!

Hey Urbanistas, I know you all have been waiting so patiently to get a recap on STLFW, so here it is! This is the 2nd time the Urbanistas attended STLFW this year and we were not disappointed. In addition to attending shows, we also decided volunteer for STLFW through The Raymond Experience. We kicked of the fun by attending Emerge on Friday night which featured Bolongaro Trevor, Love Brigade, and TRIM. We started at the bar as there were complimentary Budweiser products and the bartendars were mixing up batches of Borbatinis for guests to try. Then we headed to check out some of the vendors. Spotted were PR mavens Pamela Raymond, Cheresse Pentella, Amit Dawan, and Dwight Carter, STLFW Producer Attillio D'Agostino, media gurus Debra Bass and Gilberto Pinela, Alive Mag crew Sheniqua Faulkner, Jason Nichols, and Christy Miller, Jeff & Mary Clark of Mother Model Management, and Steve & Chena Garnett of Solique Modeling. After the show, we hit up SleeK for the afterparty, but didn't stay too long as we had to be back in the morning to work behind the scenes.

Working backstage was awesome despite the fact I had to be downtown at 6:30 am! I was back there hustling too. Although I have a full time career in HR, I didn't have a problem getting down with some of the young bucks and doing some of the grunt work! And fashion director Jill Manoff was ready to put me to work. I dug through boxes of Baker's shoes for the designers, steamed clothes for designer Paul Gibson's collection Reign, then folded and packed up clothes for Bolongaro Trevor. I loved everything they had, but one dress was so tiny it was like I could fit one thigh in it!LOL

Here is Stuart Trevor, 1/2 of the Bolongaro Trevor design team posed with Attillio in Hotel Lumiere's lobby on his way back to London. While backstage I chatted with models Christian Coffield, Madison Bradley (who just got signed to Ford), and Jade about their experiences as models in St. Louis. After all my hard work, I did get a chance to enjoy the 1:00 Evolve show to check out some of St. Louis' up and coming designers, Michael Drummond, Laura Kathleen, and Michael Shead. During the show I spotted Hostess Danielle Lee of the Fete Society in the front row bobbing her head to the funky beats the DJ was mixing.

After I went home to rest, I headed back downtown later that evening for Surface, the final fashion show of the week. I had the best time! I was a little late to the show as I was waiting for my fashionably late partner in crime, Ms. Brandii, but it all worked out as I ended up in the front row and finally got to see all the action I was missing. I was near the media section which was great as I saw the models strutting down the runway then posing which provided for great picture opportunities (click here for all the pics)!

After the show we chatted with Sande Stevenson who was doing a piece for STL-TV and will be featured as our Ultimate Urbansista in a few months, Ma'At, blogger for Outtown, Gilberto Pinela, Ola Hawatmeh with Mom Me Makeover (and this month's Ultimate Urbanista), Jennifer Neal, whose designs were featured in Project Design, the fashion show that kicked off STLFW, and Kyjuan and Murphy Lee who were also in the house.

Some of my favorite designers featured at STLFW include Bolongaro Trevor, Jennifer Neal, Laura Kathleen, Michael Shead, and Trashbiscuit. Who would've thunk that I would like the punk look of Trashbiscuit, but I really loved the creativity of this line! Overall, we had a fabulous time and have a lot more respect for all those that work to put on this great event for us Midwesterners!

Urbanistas Give Back-Big Pink Blast @ JBucks

Urbanistas, we are entering the last days of breast cancer awareness month. If you haven't done so already, please do something to support this cause; even if it's purchasing some of the products I mentioned below. I am planning to attend the Big Pink Blast @ JBucks this year to support breast cancer awareness in honor of my mother-in-law. I first heard about this event last year and didn't get a chance to attend. I heard nothing but great reviews and told myself that I wouldn't miss it again!

KLOU radio personality Julie Buck is hosting St. John’s Mercy’s second annual Big Pink Blast at Buck’s. The event takes place on Thursday, October 29, 2009, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at J.Buck’s Clayton. Tickets are $50 per person, and proceeds will benefit St. John’s Mercy Foundation in support of breast cancer services for underserved women. Your entrance fee entitles you to a $25 Studio Branca gift card. This event is selling out quickly as tickets are now only available at the door.

Make sure that you put on a touch of pink before you arrive. During the celebration, they will announce the winners of their Makeover Contest for Breast Cancer Survivors in partnership with Studio Branca Salonspa. In addition, Michael Genovese Jewelers will present a custom-designed jewelry collection to promote breast cancer awareness. A portion of the proceeds from the jewelry sales will support breast cancer services for underserved women. The evening will also feature live entertainment, pink cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and special attendance prizes.

Ultimate Urbanista-Ola Hawatmeh

Ola Hawatmeh is this month’s Ultimate Urbanista for several reasons. She is a wife, mother, business owner, socialite, fashionista, and involved in several community projects. She was recently recognized in Alive Magazine as one of St. Louis’ Most Influential Women; not to mention she is Mrs. St. Louis! I met up with Ola for lunch at Companions in Ladue to discuss her many endeavors and how she juggles it all.

Entrepreneur
Ola owns Mom Me Makeover. M3 is a makeover company that provides makeovers to mothers to help them feel more confident about themselves. Ola has recruited a five-star team consisting of a Beverly Hills Hair Stylist, personal shoppers, makeup artists, and others to help women (and men) look and feel their best.
Ola also just wrapped up producing the first ever St. Charles Fashion Week. She was inspired to start this as she is from NYC and has attended both New York and St. Louis Fashion Weeks. She thought it would be great to bring in exclusive designers from New York such as Indashio, but also give local designers a chance to showcase their fashions.

Fashionista
Ola’s favorite designers include Patricia Fields (loves), Versace, and Isaac Mizrahi. She usually makes her shopping rounds in NYC and LA, but while she is in town, she can been seen shopping in local boutiques like Courtney Gene and Jecca, and Bronx Diba for shoes. Ola loves couture, luxury, mixing and matching, but likes simplicity. She pairs neutral clothing with fun accessories like big watches which are her fave! Ola also loves layers in the winter and said that high-waters and pleated pants are a no-no!!

Socialite
Ola’s “must” attend events include Nelly’s Black and White Ball, St. Louis Fashion Week, and St. Louis Magazine’s Fever Fashion Shows. If there is a hot event in St. Louis, you are bound to see Ola. Like all Urbanistas, Ola is always on the go and she loves to venture out with her closest friends. She is always found supporting them, their business and their events on a daily basis.

Philanthropist
Ola started Makeover for a Cause which provides makeover services to several non-profit organizations that assist homeless, battered, and sheltered women, as well as cancer victims. In addition, Ola coordinates teen fashion shows exclusively for Macy’s to help young ladies feel and look good, while helping raise their self esteem.

With work and community service, I wondered how Ola could handle it all. I found out that she has a great staff and delegates a lot! She stated that “you must have a vision, and be creative”. Though Ola is a busy woman, her main priority is spending quality time with her husband and children.

Urbanistas Give Back-Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Urbanistas, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. St. Louis does a good job supporting the cause with events such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Pink at the Rink with the St. Louis Blues & Picnic in Pink (both events on October 23rd). In addition, there are several resources available for breast cancer patients such as the Gilda's Club and the Siteman Cancer Center (stay tuned for more info on Curieosity, a fab event coming up in November that will benefit this center).

As Urbanistas we should not only care about our outside appearance, but should take good care of our bodies. Start by eating a well balanced meal (I know it's not easy), getting regular medical checkups, and performing a monthly self breast examination. Breast cancer can happen to anyone, young or old. I have a Soror who is in her 20's and although she was not diagnosed with breast cancer, she has Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a form of cancer. I decided to mention her so we can realize that this thing is real and just because you are young, doesn't make you exempt. My Soror is so brave and I am so proud of her. Urbanistas in the City-Shecky's Girls Night Out

The Urbanistas had a great opportunity to attend Shecky's Girls Night Out, this past Friday at the Roberts Orpheum Theatre. And what a night out! Shecky's is based out of New York City and have hosted hundreds of Girls Night Out events in various cities like Chicago, Atlanta, LA, and of course the fashion capital NYC. This is the first year they brought the fun to St. Louis. The ladies at Shecky's were so gracious to offer me and a guest VIP access and 3 pairs of tickets to our faithful readers. Since I did a little freelance work for them, I didn't really get a chance to experience the event like I would have liked, but did get a little taste of what Shecky's is all about.

As you entered the Orpheum, there were paparazzi ready to snap up pics of all the ladies, then you could head downstairs for your "Famous Goodie Bag". Let me tell you, that goodie bag was stuffed to capacity from everything from Essie nail polish, Aveeno lotion and Kotex samples, to a free Shick razor, personal lubricant, and hangover medicine which I'm sure some of the ladies needed after indulging in 5 hours of free cocktails.

There were several clothing boutique, makeup, jewelry, and beauty vendors offering guests up to 70% off their products, some even gave out freebies! After you got your shopping on, you could head up to the stage and try out some of the new alcohol products like Bud Light Wheat Beer, Bacardi Lemonade, and my fave X-rated, which is a sweet pink liquer they mixed up with who knows what, but had us feeling good!

It was a great fete and we are definitely looking forward to hitting up Shecky's Girls Night Out when they come back to the Lou (hopefully soon)!

This fall it's all about being feminine~from light airy blouses with ruffles, to soft muted tshirts with flowers, and statement necklaces adorned with baubles and bows. Urbanistas are also pairing bright coats with neutrals to add a "pop" to their wardrobe. For accessories they are opting for opaque or patterned tights, layered necklaces, shoe booties, and throwing in a pair of funky elbow length leather gloves.

The Urbanistas decided to check out the St. Louis Pretty City event @ Mandarin this month as we attended one of their events last October, "Beautyfall" and had a fab time. Unfortunately, with the recession, we did not enjoy all the perks as last time! However, we were treated to one free cocktail and received an indulgent mani featuring OPI's South Beach Collection. The venue was not as packed as the last time, but there were enough guests to not call the event a "bust". Various salons/spas were present handing out info on their respective businesses and some offered free beauty treatments such as hair styling, makeup applications, and massages. All in all it was a decent fete, but we decided to head over to Drunken Fish for some sushi, however, didn't make it in time for the free sushi...maybe next time!

Urbanistas @ St. Louis Fashion Week Project Design

Spring was definitely in the air, and there was a great buzz for the opening fashion show to kick off St. Louis Fashion Week. As much as we would've loved to attend the entire week of fashion shows, it was a little too much to handle. Instead, we opted to attend Project Design to get a glimpse of up and coming fashion designers.

Okay, we did not expect the turnout we were faced with when we arrived! Unfortunately, the tickets were sold out and we were devastated that we could not get in. But in true Urbanista fashion, we managed to not only get in, but got VIP seating!

Of course the crowd filled with VIPs, designers, models, socialites, fashionistas, and of course Urbanistas! We ran into Jason Nichols of Alive Magazine (shout out to Jason who was so gracious to us), spotted Cheresse Pentella from Cheresse Ink handing out media passes, Nikole Shurn Perkins, D. Sly, Ola Hawatmeh from Mom Me Makeover, Ma'At Atkins, blogger for OUTTOWN, and Sande Stevenson getting her STL-TV hosting on!

We then attended the after party at SleeK at Lumiere and received more VIP treatment. For some reason they thought we were with the fashion designers so we had an entire booth stocked with free Budweiser Select and appetizers! At the after party we got a chance to meet Jeigh Singleton, Art/Fashion Design Professor with Washington University and one of the judges of the show, Author Lyah Beth Leflore (also my lovely Soror) model Christian Coffield, and Rams player Steve Jackson! Shout out to Veronica Ariel "Socialite" from Chicago...hands down, she had THE BEST fashions, but unfortunately did not take the Project Design title.

Urbanistas Give Back--Gilda's Club

On Wednesday, April 1st, Urbanistas attended an event at Flemings Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar sponsored by Gilda's Club to announce the Young Leadership Council of Gilda’s Club St. Louis.

Gilda's Club is named in honor of comedian Gilda Radner who was best known for her work on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. When describing the experience she had at a Los Angeles cancer support center, Gilda dreamed that such places could be made available for people living with cancer and their friends and families everywhere. Gilda died from ovarian cancer in 1989. But today, her spirit lives on in every Gilda's Club.

It’s the goal of the Founding Board of Gilda’s Club St. Louis to create a warm, welcoming place so that the people of the St. Louis area will never have to face cancer alone. The Founding Board believes that the establishment of a Gilda’s Club St. Louis clubhouse that is free of charge is an investment in the quality of life in the region.

The Urbanistas recently attended a benefit at Studio Blu for Earnest Strong, the firefighter shot in February when he arrived home to find three men holding his developmentally-challenged daughter hostage while burglarizing his home. As a member of the St. Louis Fire Department, Ernest accepts the fact that he will gladly put his life on the line everyday upon putting on his uniform and will go above and beyond to help anyone in need. Now F.I.R.E. (Firefighters Institute for Racial Equality) will assist him in his time of need as he begins his long journey to recovery.

On crisp Friday night the Urbanistas attended Mardi Gras Groove sponsored by Pamela Raymond with the Raymond Experience. And what an experience it was! Now just to give you a little history, Pamela is a native of New Orleans which inspired her to throw this party. She wanted to give St. Louisans the
opportunity to experience New Orleans culture. When we first walked in, we were given Lagniappe packs (goodie bags) filled with a praline from the French Quarter, a USB compliments of Blu City Spaces, a ticket for a free glass of Samuel Adams, and select bags had tickets to a Blues game. We won tickets for a free Mizzou game!

After entering, we went straight for the gumbo, which was to die for...unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to taste the King Cake, but heard it was yummy! In addition, Samuel Adams sponsored a beer tasting, and there was a tarot card reader. However, I was a little too chicken to check out the tarot card reader! This was yet another great networking opportunity as there were quite a few media representatives. We had a chance to meet Gilberto Pinela from STL-TV, Jeff Small with KSDK, Angela Tablac from St. Louis Post Dispatch, Kristen Cornett of KMOV and author of one of our favorite blogs "Kristen in the City," and Erica Byfield of KMOV, who I also found out was one of my Sorors.

Also in the house were Scott Lapp, founder of River City Professionals, Shane Cohn who I would like to mention is running for the 25th Ward Alderman, Tim Ezell from Fox 2, Debra Bass from the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and Jason Nichols from Alive Magazine.

As always, the Urbanistas had a fab time, met great people, and supported our city!

The Urbanistas had a fab time at the Buzz List Party! There was definitely a "buzz" in the air and a host of socialites, local celebrities, fashionistas, and the "Who's Who" of St. Louis. We had a chance to chat with fellow Urbanistas Pamela Raymond of The Raymond Experience and Sheniqua Faulkner of Alive Magazine; Kelly Hamilton and Jason Nichols of Alive Magazine, and met some lovely Urbanistas recently transplanted from the East Coast!

It was a great fête, and we can't wait to attend the next Alive Magazine event!!

Urbanistas at Lucas Park Grille & EXO

The Urbanistas kicked off the new year with a private cocktail soiree at Lucas Park Grille. We noshed on delectable appetizers and sipped on decadent martinis. After we socialized, we headed to our private room for dinner. Each Urbanista discussed goals for the new year, gave an update on their career, and/or promoted their respective businesses. After dinner, we headed for EXO for FreeTime's weekly Groove Theory. Of course, in true Urbanista fashion, we were ready to get our pictures snapped up by B. Free Paparrazi! What a night!!
